A writing method that works for me.

So, remember when I said at the beginning of 2019 that I’m starting a new novel this year? No? Read it here.

On to the updates.

Working Title – Kaolin

I have a tentative working title of Kaolin. That’s definitely the name of one of the main characters. Whether it works as a title, I don’t know ye, but I’ll let you know.

The Ash Garden

What’s going on with my post-modern novella? The book is with publishers and I’m waiting to hear a yes or a no. If the first round of queries doesn’t produce a yes, then in about four months (after the standard six months waiting period), I’ll send out the second round of query letters.

I’ve decided to hang on to the spec script I wrote based on The Ash Garden for now.


New Writing Method

It’s backwards and totally wrong. As I work on my routine, I can almost hear thousands of writing teachers screaming in pain. Sucks to be them, because this works for me, and helps me to get ideas out of my head much faster than anything else I tried before.

I’m writing the Kaolin script at the same time as the novel. Le gasp! And honestly? It’s so much fun!

I write one page of a novel, then realize that scene is never going to work in a screenplay. So I rearrange, then patch things together. Now it works, as either a novel or a screenplay. Everyone wins. I’m not just writing or crafting, I’m quilting.

Writing Method Example

I started writing the novel with a scene that takes place at night during a power outage. Then, enter a main character. But then I stopped writing, because I had no idea what happens before this point in the story’s timeline.

Without knowing what happens before, I can’t write what happens after. I wasn’t even sure what year this story is suppose to be. I know it’s near future, but when?

So I switched to script format and thought about the timeline. For the first slugline, I wrote:


And now I know where I am in the story. No need for outlines, structures, or hundreds of useless notes. I have my method and that’s all I need. Scene heading, action, dialogue. Move on. Back to the novel. Break. Back to the screenplay.
